IFSA - International Feed Safety Alliance

AIC   Ovocom   QS   Productschap Diervoeder   FEFAC

In conjunction with Fefac (the European Feed Manufacturers Federation), the following four bodies had the honour of becoming the founding members of the IFSA: the AIC (British), OVOCOM asbl (Belgian), the PDV (Dutch) and QS (German). The IFSA (International Feed Safety Alliance) works towards the goal of an international common standard to guarantee the safety of animal feed, the IFIS (IFSA Feed Ingredient Standard). The IFSA, founded in 2004, has published the IFIS standards and the Rules of Certification relating to the standard since 1st September 2005.

Despite the fact that each of the four abovementioned bodies already had its own quality system, and that mutual recognition agreements had been concluded with the various countries, it goes without saying that the existence of a single, common standard offers many advantages. It favours the safety of food intended for humans and animals, as well as traceability on an international level.

To make all of this more concrete: since 1st January 2006 and all over the world, the suppliers of raw materials intended for the compound feed industry can be IFIS-certified. The IFIS is accepted as a single standard by the five founding companies. In this way, once they have been IFIS-certified, the suppliers concerned will no longer have to face national demands and obstacles, which will allow them to make savings.

The implementation of the standard is steered by the four companies that own the standard, and co-ordinated by the IFSA. A central website (http://www.ifsa-info.net)will serve to publish the names of accredited certification bodies and certified companies. The document titled “Rules of Certification”, drafted by the IFSA, comprises details of the modalities certification, auditing and inspections of implementation. In this way, the IFIS can be uniformly implemented.
